Switzerland chooses the F-35 to replace F/A-18s and F-5s
Switzerland becomes the 8th european country to order the Lockheed Martin F-35 for its armed forces. The aircraft is set to replace the legacy F/A-18 Hornets and F-5 Freedom Fighters at the end of the decade.
The F-35A beat the French Rafale, the European Typhoon and the American F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.
Lockheed Martin has offered Switzerland the possibility to manufacture and maintain F-35 canopies for European customers. Some other components will also be manufactured in the country. Ruag was even selected to build 4 F-35 in its facilities, even though it is highly unlikely given the cost of the operation.
The Swiss F/A-18 Hornets and F-5 Freedom Fighters will be missed in European airshows, let's hope the F-35 can be a good challenger to these legacy fighters !
